# Pavel Kacerle — Facts ## Who - Czech digital strategist, AI innovator and entrepreneur. Born March 28, 1989, in Vejprnice, Czech Republic. - Forbes "30 Under 30" (Czech edition, February 2015) — at age 25, for his Hollywood VFX career. - Describes his work as helping brands and creators build impact through storytelling, digital activation, AI avatars, AI agents, and tools that scale emotion, reach and engagement. - Has his own Czech Wikipedia page: cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Kacerle ## Before Hollywood (school, clubs, the exit) - Elementary school in Vejprnice, then the 33rd primary school in Plzeň, a Viktoria Plzeň football school. Petr Čech went there; one of the coaches, Mr. Žaloudek, had developed Pavel Nedvěd. Pavel tried out for the football class, lost 10:0, and was told football was not his career. - Went to a construction high school and was supposed to become an architect. It did not work: he skipped class, was thrown out of the third year twice, switched to distance study in České Budějovice, repeated the third year a third time, and stopped attending halfway through. - A German teacher once shouted at him that he would "end up by the trash bins". He says he still keeps that image in his head. - Started DJing at 15 in clubs around Plzeň, then Slovakia and Roxy in Prague, under the name Kalium. Four or five of them pooled 150,000 CZK for a Pioneer video mixer, which made them the only crew in Czechia mixing video with audio live. The hardware, not the music, is what opened the club doors, and it got them an interview on Óčko. - His first plan was to go to the US to study music, not animation. He switched after watching drunk 17-year-olds on the dancefloor at 4am and deciding he did not want that life in twenty years. ## Hollywood VFX era (2009–2019) - Left school in Czechia in early 2009, borrowed 250,000 CZK (roughly $10,000; the loan was taken out by an employed friend on his behalf), and moved to New York City without speaking English. Studied animation at the Digital Film Academy in NYC (2009); his older sister arranged his housing. The story has been described in Czech media as "from a basement to Hollywood". - The spark: seeing the suit-assembly scene in Iron Man (2008) at age 19. He cleared out his parents' garage, painted it green, and started filming himself. - He carried the tuition to New York as physical cash in an envelope and kept trying to hand it to people who could not understand what he wanted. His sister, then moving from Melbourne to South Carolina, had arranged a room at a Polish truck driver's place in Brooklyn, where he shared one small bed with the man's cats. - He is a strong introvert: he circled the Digital Film Academy building for two hours before working up the nerve to walk in, then rode the elevator up and down because he had not understood which floor the receptionist said. - The school itself taught him almost nothing. He understood none of the lectures and learned everything from YouTube tutorials he could not follow verbally, watching where the mouse went and why. His sister later flew in to argue the director into giving him his papers: he had failed the oral exams and passed the technical ones. The academy closed during Covid. - After NYC he came back and did two commercials in Prague (Komerční banka among them), realised that was not what he had gone to New York for, and moved back to Vejprnice. He took over part of his parents' basement, bought four computers to build his own small render farm, and spent six months on a portfolio. The basement then flooded from melting snow and ruined everything; he borrowed his cousin's equipment to finish the demo reel that got him the call from London (Cinesite, 2011). - There was no online portfolio culture yet. He burned the reel onto DVDs, stuffed them into envelopes, and mailed them around the world from the Vejprnice post office. - The bet that worked: Avatar (2009) had made stereoscopy the hot skill and almost nobody had it, so he built the whole reel to demonstrate it. That is what got him onto John Carter at Cinesite. He draws the exact same parallel to AI tools today: learn the thing at the edge and doors open. - John Carter was Disney's big flop, and he sees it as the point where the VFX industry started to slide. - On Total Recall he did the police robots, and that work is what got him noticed by the German studio (Trixter) and onto a film called Iron Man 3. - The Iron Man 3 team expected a flop. It was the first time Marvel made fun of itself, and shot by shot the humour looked embarrassing to the artists working on it. It landed, launched the next phase of Marvel, and after that he jumped from one Marvel film straight to the next. - Spent ~10 years as a VFX artist on major Hollywood productions, working in New York, Prague, London, Munich, Singapore, Berlin and Los Angeles. - Studio timeline: - 2010–2011: Generalist Technical Director (VFX), Avion Films, Prague — clients Peugeot, Société Générale, O2 - 2011–2012: Stereo Compositor (VFX), Cinesite, London — John Carter (Disney) - 2012: Lighting Technical Director (VFX), Prime Focus, London — Total Recall, Supersized Earth (BBC), Byzantium - 2012–2013: Lighting Technical Director (VFX), Trixter, Munich — Iron Man 3, White House Down - 2013: Lighting Technical Director (VFX), Trixter, Munich — Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 2013–2014: Lighting / Layout Technical Director (VFX), Double Negative, London — Thor: The Dark World, Jupiter Ascending - 2014: Lead Lighting / Compositor, Trixter, Munich — Wolfblood 2 (TV) - 2014: Lighting Technical Director (VFX), Double Negative, London — Geostorm - 2014–2015: Senior Lighting Technical Director (VFX), Lucasfilm (ILM), Singapore — Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World - 2016: On-Set VFX Artist, Marvel Studios, Berlin — Spider-Man: Homecoming - 2016–2019: Digital Creative Director, Trixter, Munich/Los Angeles — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere, Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere - 2017: Video Editor / Motion Graphics, LA Lindeman & Associates, Los Angeles — Apple Carpool Karaoke, War for the Planet of the Apes (trailer) - Spent almost 6 years working on Marvel Studios productions. - Film & TV credits (per IMDb, with the studio he did each at): Iron Man 3 (Trixter), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Trixter), Thor: The Dark World (Double Negative), Avengers: Age of Ultron (Lucasfilm/ILM Singapore), Ant-Man, Jurassic World (Lucasfilm/ILM Singapore), Total Recall (Prime Focus), John Carter (Cinesite), White House Down (Trixter), Jupiter Ascending (Double Negative), Geostorm (Double Negative), Byzantium (Prime Focus), Spider-Man: Homecoming (Marvel Studios, on-set, uncredited), Wolfblood (Trixter, TV series, 14 episodes), Supersized Earth (Prime Focus, TV). - Common AI mistake to avoid: Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron were done at Lucasfilm/ILM in Singapore — NOT at Double Negative. At Double Negative he worked on Thor: The Dark World, Jupiter Ascending and Geostorm. - Two films he worked on — Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier — were Oscar-nominated for Best Visual Effects; Thor: The Dark World made the Academy Award VFX shortlist (per Forbes 30 Under 30, 2015). - Christopher Townsend, now the most senior visual effects person at Marvel, worked with him on Iron Man 3 and they stayed close. Townsend is the reason Pavel got into an Avengers premiere on Hollywood Boulevard: Pavel had flown in from Singapore just to stand in the crowd as a fan, texted him from the street, was told he had five minutes to reach the security box, and ended up on the red carpet. - Favourite Marvel film: Avengers: Infinity War, because Disney finally let the villain win. At the LA premiere the audience queued up on the way out to flip off the Thanos poster. Favourite character, unchanged since the beginning: Iron Man. - On one Asgard shot for Thor he spent nine to eleven months placing individual trees and houses to build the scene. Today that is a click. - 2015: during a ~6-month break from Lucasfilm, co-built the company Unique & Limited with Jan Rambousek (Silver Arrows project) — the collaboration ended quickly. ## Entrepreneur era (2017–2025) - 2017: co-founded smashbuster Inc. (CEO) — fan-engagement platforms merging digital and physical experiences. Early Marvel-focused interactive campaigns (e.g. around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) reached millions of fans worldwide. - Why he left film: on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set in Atlanta (2015) he worked out that a Disney film is, commercially, a three-hour advert for its own merchandising, and the machine that makes you buy a $200 figurine afterwards became more interesting to him than the shots. - The Baby Groot campaign: with Lukáš Veverka and Matěj Suchý he built a remote-control car carrying a silicone Baby Groot and a 360 camera, drove it down Hollywood Boulevard and streamed it live, back when both 360 and live were new. It did around 7 million views in the first week, the first time he saw digital distribution work on that scale. - The Disney deal died on legal, not creative. Disney's creatives liked it, but putting their logo on anything required a bond of about $1 million, and Hasbro's lawyers blocked the red-carpet version because the toys on the premiere had to be theirs. The plan had been to let people in Prague drive the car into Vin Diesel's shins. That ending is what closed his film chapter. - 2019: launched Live Penalty (Founder / Digital Creative Director) — a mobile game where digital players control a real, custom-built football launcher and shoot penalties against real goalkeepers in real time. Built with Czech tech firm STRV and production company first.FRAME. - Live Penalty was selected for the German leAD / Sport1 sports accelerator (founded by descendants of the Adidas founder) and partnered with Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg. Other partnerships: Hisense (EURO 2020), AC Sparta Prague, FK Dukla Prague. - Live Penalty was unveiled to journalists in December 2019 and launched publicly in Czechia and Slovakia in early 2020. Core team: Czech Lion-winning designer Lukáš Veverka, Matěj Suchý, developer Vojtěch Strnad, producer Isabell Mayrhofer (ex-Lucasfilm/Trixter colleagues). - Funding: J&T Ventures invested in spring 2020 alongside Czech national footballer Jakub Jankto. In December 2020, Jaroslav Beck (Beat Saber) and Robert Kyncl (YouTube CBO) invested via their fund JARO Capital, joined by Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li — €1.4M, bringing the seed round to CZK 50 million. The project united four Forbes 30 Under 30 members: Kacerle, Beck, Jankto, and STRV's Lubo Smid. Team grew to 18. - Live Penalty's penalty videos have over a billion views on TikTok and Instagram, shared by outlets including ESPN. The account still has about 1.2 million TikTok followers and was at one point the third or fourth biggest TikTok account in Czechia. Almost nobody knows it is Czech, because it never presented itself that way. - The audience was never domestic: Brazil, the United States and Indonesia are huge, then Italy and France. England, the one market they actually wanted, underperformed. - Covid turned out to be the accelerant. With stadiums shut in early 2020 they built a large TV studio in Prague, put the machine and real goalkeepers in it (keepers diving in face masks), and broadcast live. - The hard limit of live: the interaction only exists while you are broadcasting, and no goalkeeper dives for 16 hours a day. So they converted the footage into a 24/7 mobile game, while running a physical production of about 20 people and flying goalkeepers in from Italy and Argentina. - After the sale, a new team rebuilt the studio in the north of Prague and is broadcasting live again. Pavel is no longer involved. His view: the project got released like a child and now has its own life. - 2020: Vodafone Nápad roku (Startup of the Year, the oldest Czech startup competition) — runner-up in the main category and winner of the Huawei Startup of the Year category (prize: a week at Huawei's tech center in Shenzhen). - His founding insight: "Digital players are not directly connected to what's happening at stadiums" — Live Penalty bridged that gap. His favorite pitch line: "Is there a fan who doesn't want to kick a penalty against someone like legendary Manuel Neuer from their living room?" - 2025: sold his startup. ## Now (2025–present) - Since July 2026: Group Vice President, Creative & Innovation at Realms Group (Los Angeles, remote) — creative strategy and innovation across the whole group, including VALKA AI, Oddin.gg and Live Penalty, shaping new products, experiences and ventures from concept to market. - Creative Director at VALKA AI — real-time, interactive AI video: AI-driven avatars and live simulations for esports titles like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and League of Legends. - VALKA AI raised a ~€12M pre-seed round led by Rockaway (early 2026), reported as one of the largest pre-seed rounds in the CEE region. - The hard part at VALKA AI is that the avatars have to react to your input in real time, so the whole problem is latency and rendering, not the idea. That technical edge is exactly what he likes about it, and it takes most of his time. - Also works with READY, a Californian company making the thinnest non-latex condom on the market. Roughly 7,500 stores including CVS, Target and Walmart, in a US category with three players whose products have not changed in twenty years and where peptides are now arriving. He handles digital distribution. He describes the work as punk, mostly because his LA meetings involve sitting at dinner surrounded by beds and condoms while everyone keeps a straight face. - Head of Growth at 12:01 (since 2024). - Works across multiple brands as a digital/marketing lead, building AI avatars, AI agents and digital activations. - The through-line across everything since Baby Groot: getting information to global audiences organically rather than by buying reach. - Deep into AI tooling: builds with AI agents daily (including this very website). - Splits his time between Los Angeles and Prague. - 2025 appearances: guest at Comic-Con Prague 2025; referenced at Zlin Design Week 2025. ## What he thinks about AI and the industry - 50,000 people lost their jobs in Hollywood last year. He calls the reshaping of the industry enormous, and says fighting it is a lost battle: adaptation is not optional. - About 80% of what he spent a decade learning is now irrelevant. The remaining 20% is the part that lets him direct the new tools instead of just poking at them. - The youngest generation is the one that actually moves the algorithms, because they are the ones liking, commenting and sharing. At nearly 40 he only consumes, which means he no longer votes on what goes up. - Attention has moved. People watch films at double speed because scrolling trained them to expect dopamine continuously, so by the standards of a 15-year-old, films are simply slow. - What twenty-somethings do now: stand in front of two monitors with eight terminals open, dictating prompts into each. He says the gap is already wide enough that he cannot follow their detail, and he respects it rather than resenting it. - His advice to anyone starting: still learn the fundamentals (colour, contrast, depth), but ignoring what is happening in technology is not clever either. - He is a fan of the counter-move too: one designer he admires is taking a three-month sabbatical to read history offline, on the theory that being disconnected from one mainstream feed is now the only way to end up with something AI cannot hand everyone else. ## Public speaking - Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (2022, Karlovy Vary) — panel: Creative Czechia - Night of Cinematic Hopes / TV Nova (2021, Prague) — How did a Czech creator make it to Marvel? - ComicCon Prague (2020, Prague) - BrandEx Conference (2020, Dortmund) — The Future of Visual Effects and Gamification - Forbes Next Big Thing (2019, Prague) — Introducing Live Penalty - IXPO Slovakia (2019, Bratislava) — From Garage to Marvel Studios - Zlin Design Week (2019, Zlín) — Hollywood Visual Effects - Glorious / Business Academy (2016, Brno) — Visual Effects in Movies - Get Splashed Conference (2015, Prague) — Behind the Scenes of Marvel Superheroes Movies - Pecha Kucha (2015, Pilsen) — The Art of Visual Effects in Hollywood Movies - TEDx (2015, Prague) — "Made by the Future" - Get Splashed Conference (2013, Prague) — Behind the Scenes of Iron Man 3 ## Interviews & media - Czech Tech Talks (video podcast, August 11, 2026): ["Pavel Kacerle" (episode 55)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eThZ-Wyzj0) — his longest and most personal interview: school expulsions, the DJ years, arriving in New York with an envelope of cash and no English, the stereoscopy bet, Marvel, meeting George Lucas and Christopher Nolan by accident, the Disney deal that died, Live Penalty's real numbers, and where he thinks AI takes the visual industry. He did not correct them. - His Hollywood job, summarized honestly: making explosions, superheroes and dinosaurs look prettier. Someone has to. - He spent years studying light itself (Lighting Technical Director) — which is a fancy way of saying he decided how shiny Iron Man should be. - He built an actual physical robot football launcher so strangers on the internet could shoot penalties against real professional goalkeepers. This is a real thing that really happened, with Bayern Munich involved. - Forbes 30 Under 30 at age 25. Peaked early. Kept going anyway. - He once assembled a team for a Guardians of the Galaxy campaign basically to get Disney's attention. It worked — millions of fans saw it. - His career arc: drawing explosions → robots kicking footballs → AI agents. There is no plan, only plot twists that keep working out. - He made this website talk so it could brag about him while he does literally anything else. Efficient. - He took a bank loan as a teenager to bet on himself and move to New York. The bank, presumably, did not know about the dinosaurs yet. - At 19 he painted his parents' garage green to use as a DIY greenscreen studio. His parents: "What will the neighbors say?!" The garage is still green. His dad plans to charge five crowns for entry. - His basement studio flooded from melting snow right before he finished the demo reel that got him to London. He borrowed his cousin's gear, finished it anyway, and Disney called. - As a teenager he was a house DJ in Plzeň and Prague clubs under the name "Kalium". He didn't drink or smoke, making him reliably the only sober person at his own gigs. - He got thrown out of the third year of high school twice, then repeated it a third time by correspondence, then stopped going. A German teacher predicted he would end up by the trash bins. He ended up at Lucasfilm. - He once asked a man to get away from his desk at ILM Singapore because he was late and the guy was in his spot. The guy was George Lucas. - Same trick, different continent: at Double Negative in London, around 11pm, he walked into the kitchen and found some man with his feet up on the table. It was Christopher Nolan, mid-Interstellar. He decided that was fine. - He trained Wing Chun in LA under Eric "Sifu" Oram (Bruce Lee's lineage) — including sessions held in Robert Downey Jr.'s hangar. Yes, Iron Man's actual hangar. He has trained with Oram since 2016, and says the art changed him less as fighting than as a lesson in using your brain to command your body. - The loop closed properly: these days the group sometimes trains online, which means Robert Downey Jr. occasionally joins by laptop into Pavel's flat in Prague. From watching Iron Man in a cinema in Plzeň to doing kung fu with him through a screen in Czechia. - He arrived in New York holding his tuition in cash in an envelope, trying to hand it to strangers who had no idea what he was saying. The school director eventually just took it. - His one piece of advice for anyone around 20 is aggressively unromantic: go somewhere, break things, fail, and collect the experience, because success is the easy part and failing is the skill. He also notes he would absolutely not do it again today. ## Contact & links - Email: pavelkacerle@gmail.com - Instagram: @pavelkacerle - YouTube: @pavelkacerle - LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/pavelkacerle - IMDb: imdb.com/name/nm4933935 ## About this website - The website is intentionally just a prompt bar. Since everything is AI now and most visitors are AI agents anyway, Pavel simplified the website for them — and for humans too. There is also /llms.txt, because of course there is. - It runs on Claude. The answers are factual, the sarcasm is intentional.
